Newspaper Sparks Outrage After Comparing 1916 Rising With Modern Terrorism

The article goes so far as to compare Dublin in 1916 to the Brussels attacks.

This is bizarre.

An article in The Telegraph has sparked outrage this week after comparing the 1916 Rising to modern terrorism including the recent attacks in Brussels.

Referring to the Irish Republicans involved in the Rising as “armed fanatics bent on inflicting bloody carnage in the name of a political ideology with quasi-religious overtones”, the article argued that we have many lessons to learn from the Rising when it comes to fighting extremism today.

Comparing Dublin in 1916 to the recent Brussels attacks, the article reads: “Just as official Brussels turned a blind eye to the entry of trained and dedicated terrorists through their wide open borders, so the British officials ruling Ireland permitted the training and military drilling of the rebels for fear of offending Irish national sensibilities”.

Spotted on JOE.ie, many are voicing their disgust at the “offensive” and misinformed piece.
