Think that emigrating Down Under is all hot weather, surfing and clear, blue seas? Eh, you might want to think again, because the water in the Sydney area has turned blood red. Yes, seriously.
The Huffington Post reports that algae is the culprit for this change in colour and so far, the algae has managed to shut down Bondi Beach and Sydney’s Clovelly Beach. (How raging would you be if you were on holiday in Australia right now?)
The good news is that if you want to take a dip in the water, you still can. However the algae, known as noctiluca scintillans (or “sea sparkle”) can irritate the skin if you stay immersed in it for too long.
A local life guard said that the algae made the water look like “tomato sauce.” He wouldn’t be wrong with this description – just have a look at it:

We don’t know about you, but we much prefer Bondi when its water is bright blue.
