For June Emerson, that moment was something of a heart-stopper.
Emerson was at Manhattan Beach in California over the Christmas break, and took some snaps as her 12-year old son Quinn and his friend played in the waves.
When she later went through the pictures, she spotted a shark lurking behind the pair.
Ms. Emerson said she told the boys it was a dolphin, so as not to scare them, but lifeguards and surfers in the area later told her it was most likely a juvenile great white shark.
