What is going on?
When you look at the below image, that has been shared on Twitter by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, what colour strawberries do you see?
2色法によるイチゴの錯視。この画像はすべてシアン色(青緑色)の画素でできているが、イチゴは赤く見える。
Strawberries appear to be reddish, though the pixels are not. pic.twitter.com/Ginyhf61F7

Red, right?
Well, you would be wrong in thinking that.
There are actually only grey and green pixels used to create the picture but they produce an optical illusion.
Kitaoka says, “Illusion of strawberry by the two-color method. Although this image are all made of the pixels of the cyan (blue-green), strawberries appear red, though the pixels are not.”
Some other people on Twitter have tried to explain what’s happening with the photo.
@social_brains I isolated a few of the colors that appear most “red” in the strawberries and put them on the white background to the right. pic.twitter.com/GJJ9PJqNxt

@kyletsp @social_brains Your brain is white-balancing the image. Sees the cyan tint, automatically shifts all colours in opposite direction.

@kyletsp @social_brains ‘White’ light goes from yellow (indoor) to blue (outdoor). Yr brain is used to adjusting seamlessly, exploited here!
