Just when it looked like The Dark Knight Rises was going to claim the top spot of the US box office charts for a fourth week in a row, along comes The Bourne Legacy.
The latest instalment of the Bourne film franchise, starring Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, took over $40 million in its opening weekend knocking Christian Bale and co off the number one spot for the first time in a number of weeks.
However, Christopher Nolan’s final instalment of the Batman franchise still managed to draw in almost $20 million over the weekend and the hype doesn’t look set to ease any time soon.
Out later this month The Bourne Legacy sees Renner, star of The Hurt Locker, play a secret agent similar to the character of Jason Bourne played three times by Matt Damon.

Matt Damon has played the role of Jason Bourne for three of the films.
