RTÉ2 are showing a documentary tonight that everyone needs to watch

Her

Louise O’Neill presents Asking For It, a documentary about our attitudes to consent and the rise in sexual assaults in Ireland.

O’Neill, whose 2015 novel – also titled ‘Asking For It’ – tackled the complexities around sexual consent and the clash between traditional Irish attitudes to rape and the modern world of social media.

In Tuesday night’s documentary, to be shown on RTÉ2 at 9.30pm, O’Neill looks at how 4 out of every 10 Irish women would be the victims of sexual assault in their lifetimes and shows how we need to talk about consent, and how everyone needs to be part of a conversation on the subject.

She hears a diverse range of opinions throughout the documentary, such as those of Senator Lynn Ruane, former student union president of Trinity College Dublin who has written openly about her own sexual experiences.

She also speaks to JOE.ie about the pieces they have written – including this article on the Brock Turner case in Stanford – and why rape culture is still such a part of the fabric of this country.

Asking For It: Reality Bites will be shown on RTÉ2 on Tuesday evening at 9.30pm.
