7 unforgettable things you have to do in Paris

Alice Murray

‘Paris is always a good idea.’

Audrey Hepburn knew exactly what she was talking about when she said these wise words in the film Sabrina all those years ago.

From the food, to the culture and from the language, to the style, you will be hard pushed to find a city more elegant than gay Paris.

Here are our tops picks of the things you need to see (and eat) in the French capital.

See the Eiffel Tower

When you’re in Paris you have to go and see the Eiffel Tower but save yourself some time and money and don’t bother going up it. Take a few photos at the bottom of it and move on, trust me there are lots of better views in Paris, like our next stop…

Go to Montparnasse Tower

This huge skyscraper gives you unparalleled views of Paris. It’s pretty much like the French version of Top of the Rock or the Empire State. Try go just before sunset and watch the sun go down over the city. Make sure you are there on the hour so you can watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night, it really is amazing.

Hop on a boat

Paris offers some great hop on hop off boat tours. They take you to all the main sights including the Notre Dam, Champs-Élysées and Arc de Triomphe. It’s a much nicer way to see the city than sitting on a stuffy bus. The boats come to each stop every half an hour so you won’t be waiting around for long which is perfect when you are trying to cram loads into a weekend.

Munch on some Macarons

It wouldn’t be a trip to Paris without some macarons. We recommend Ladureé on Champs Elysées. They’ll cost you a pretty penny but it would be rude to not have at least one. If crêpes are more your thing, then you’re in for a treat. Some of the best crêpes you can get in Paris are straight out of food trucks on the street so don’t always assume a fancy café will have the best ones.

Skip the Mona Lisa but see the Jardin des Tuileries

Make sure you go to the Louvre just to see the stunning architecture but if you’re just in Paris for the weekend then skip going inside. The queues are long and unless you’re a massive art fan then you’ll likely be bored. Instead, snap a few pictures of the outside and mosey along the Jardin De Tuileries right outside the gallery. It’s full of beautiful fountains and areas to sit and watch the world go by. Grab a hot chocolate and relax.

Pop into Musee de l’Orangerie

You couldn’t go to Paris without soaking up a little bit of culture. Just off the side of the Tuileries Gardens is Musee de l’Orangerie, a perfect art gallery if you want to see some great art but don’t have all day. The gallery is home to lots of great impressionist and post-impressionist works of art including the famous Water Lillies murals by Claude Monet.

Watch the sunrise from Trocadéro

Without a doubt one of the best views in Paris. Trocadéro is the perfect place to get your Eiffel Tower pictures and iconic Paris snaps. It gets quite busy during the day so your best bet is to go early in the morning if you want uninterrupted photos.
