Stuck For Something To Do This Weekend? Why Not Go Sailing

The Dun Laoghaire Regatta runs from 9th - 12th July.

If you are on the market for a new hobby, or just want to feel like you’ve made the most of your weekend, why not give sailing a go?

There is something about getting out on a boat in the fresh sea air that really makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something.

And the social life? Oh, buoy.

Last week we decided to rock the boat a bit and headed seaward to Dun Laoghaire harbour to take part in a practice boat race ahead of the Dun Laoghaire Regatta.

The bay was just beautiful as the sun set and as the chairman of the Regatta, Timothy Goodbody aptly pointed out: “We don’t know how lucky we are when we live by the sea.”

We were a sight to behold in our waterproof gear as we jumped aboard the ‘White Mischief’ and set sail.

For a complete novice, ‘sailing talk’ is like another language, but one thing we certainly learned quickly (the hard way) was “mind the boom”.

Because this was a race, there was no spoon-feeding the newbies, which in retrospect is the best way to learn – straight in at the deep end.

The adrenaline was pumping, the sea air was refreshing, and the sense of teamwork was exhilarating.

(Coming first in our class was an added bonus.)

Our top tips for beginners?

  • Wear sunscreen – you’d be surprised how quickly you’ll burn in high winds.
  • Keep hydrated and bring snacks – you’ll work up an appetite.
  • Sit to the side of the boat.
  • If you’re feeling seasick – focus on the horizon and try not to go below deck.
  • Wear a lifejacket
  • If you have long hair – tie it up
  • Mind. The. Boom.

If it sounds like something you would like to try, the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta is the perfect festival for newbies and seasoned sailors alike.

It will take place from 9th – 12th July and there is plenty of action both on water and on dry land.

Those who aren’t keen on jumping aboard will love the beautiful surroundings and lively festival atmosphere.
