Last week we decided to rock the boat a bit and headed seaward to Dun Laoghaire harbour to take part in a practice boat race ahead of the Dun Laoghaire Regatta.
The bay was just beautiful as the sun set and as the chairman of the Regatta, Timothy Goodbody aptly pointed out: "We don't know how lucky we are when we live by the sea."
We were a sight to behold in our waterproof gear as we jumped aboard the 'White Mischief' and set sail. For a complete novice, 'sailing talk' is like another language, but one thing we certainly learned quickly (the hard way) was "mind the boom".

Because this was a race, there was no spoon-feeding the newbies, which in retrospect is the best way to learn - straight in at the deep end.
The adrenaline was pumping, the sea air was refreshing, and the sense of teamwork was exhilarating.
(Coming first in our class was an added bonus.)
Our top tips for beginners?
It will take place from 9th - 12th July and there is plenty of action both on water and on dry land.
Those who aren't keen on jumping aboard will love the beautiful surroundings and lively festival atmosphere.
