The bizarre thing you should do before bed for a good night’s sleep

Ah this takes the biscuit altogether.

Cathy Donohue

Ah now.

Supposedly wearing sunglasses before bed can improve your chances of a good night’s sleep but honestly, I don’t know what to think.

It sounds completely bizarre but in saying that, as a self-confessed insomniac, I’m willing to give it a go.

Sleep researcher Glenn Landry spoke to CBC News about why he thinks wearing sunglasses (yes really) before bed is a good idea.

Glenn explained:

“Beginning at eight at night, two hours before the time I want to go to bed, I wear sunglasses. Not because my future’s so bright, but because I’m trying to avoid light. I’m trying to tell my clock that this is the end of the day”.

Backing up Glenn’s advice is Teresa Liu-Ambrose, who’s in charge of physical activity, mobility, and cognitive neuroscience at the Univeristy of British Columbia.

Teresa has reviewed Glenn’s research and she agrees, saying that it becomes even more important to reduce bright light at night as you become older.

“In your 20s you might have gotten away with it. When you’re older, you have to be a little more diligent about providing that stimuli at the most appropriate time”.

While it might be hard to factor in a couple of hours wearing sunglasses before bed, there’s definitely something to be said for reducing bright lights at night.
