The Ten Musical Anthems Every Friendship Needs

'Cause every friendship deserves a theme tune.

Her

There are few pleasures in life greater than dancing along to a killer tune with the bestie. Maybe it’s at a hip festival, or while you’re dressed to the nines. Or maybe it’s in your bedroom on a Thursday night when picking out your clothes for the weekend debauchery (it’s ok, we don’t judge).

What we do insist is that you take this time to sit back and enjoy some of the best friendship anthems to grace the airwaves. Grab the hairbrush and get singing along…

Girls Just Want To Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper

Who could argue with Cyndi Lauper. It may have been the 80s, but the girl knew how to get the message out loud and clear. Girls DO just want to have fun, and this song goes a long way in downing the shot and heading straight to the dancefloor. Step aside ladies…

In My Life – The Beatles/ Johnny Cash

This is obviously a slow song, and even though you might not be fist pumping, you can’t deny they’re pretty amazing lyrics. We all know someone who deserves the respect this song shows, and although we’re a big fan of The Beatles, we’re giving this slot to Johnny Cash. It just has a little more feeling this way. Tenner bets you make her cry.

Wannabe – Spice Girls

No friendship anthems list is complete without a mention of the girl power days. We’re all pretty guilty of those two strips of hair gelled to frame our face and who can forget those black band chokers? One thing we’ll never turn our back on is our Spice Girls love. Oh and this song…

Lean On Me – Bill Withers

As with every friendship, sometimes the tough times require a lot of tea, a mountain of chocolate and a comfy pillow to hug/cry/fall asleep huddled against. In these times, there’s always one friend who embodies every inch of this song, and we love them for it. It mightn’t get you up dancing, but a sing-along is pretty sweet too…

I’ll Be There For You – The Rembrandts

So no-one told you life was going to be this way? Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s DOA – and that pretty much sums up the reason we love this song. There’s no hiding the truth from a bestie, and chances are you’ve shared many a morning curled up watching re-runs of Friends to get you through the day. Obviously, never trust a person who doesn’t clap along to the theme tune. They’re just not normal.

Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman – Britney Spears

We’ve all had the friend who knows us from the days of awkward braces and frizzy hair. Blue eyeshadow was most likely smeared across our eyelids and training bras were the ultimate in lingerie chic. These girls are worth their weight in gold. They’ll also harbour a secret affection for Britney from the days of JT and Disney club. This one’s for her.

You’re My Best Friend – Queen

This song makes us think of summer drinks, days on the beach and all the nostalgic memories you could throw a towel of sand at. Time to trawl the photo albums and stick on the vibes of a childhood of fun in the sun. Yes, we’re living in Ireland and realise that there’s a strong chance we’re throwing on the rose-tinted glasses, but you get the point.

With A Little Help From My Friends – The Beatles

You can’t be all that surprised to see two Beatles tracks in the top 10, but it’s only because they both earned their place. Sure there was some real magic between young Mc Cartney and Lennon, so why not spread the love with a bestie. Also reserved for all karaoke nights. Double points if people are singing along by the end of the second verse…

Single Ladies – Beyonce

There are a few times in life where you need to rally round with the girls and throw yourself on the dancefloor. This song, playing anywhere, is one of those times. It’s just about everything you need to get a serious booty shake, and the universal dance move of a hand swipe means you’ll drag every wall flower within a mile into a dance-off. Sure what else would you expect from Queen Bey?

You’ve Got A Friend In Me – Randy Newman

Buzz and Woody nailed this song as one of the best friendship duets ever. We’re pretty sure if we have a glass of wine in one hand, that there’s a strong chance we’ll be belting this out within minutes. We’re being endearing. No, really. Ok, we’ll let them win you over…
