There’s a sweet reason Italians throw almonds instead of wedding confetti

Planning a wedding?

If you’re about to walk up the aisle, chances are you’ll be aware of the rather strict rules many churches and wedding ceremony venues have in place regarding the flinging of confetti outside.

While it’s practically essential for capturing that Instagram-perfect shot, some confetti is made of micro-plastic which doesn’t break down, making it truly terrible for the environment.

While there are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives available now (hit Etsy for dried flower petals and lavender buds or opt for bubbles or bird seed) one of the cutest options we’ve come across is an ancient Italian tradition.

In Italian culture, sugar-coated almonds represent happiness, health, fertility and prosperity. Known as bomboniere, the couple wrap some sugared almonds in tulle for each guest at the wedding.

Family and friends throw the almonds, often mixed with small coins or rice, in the air as the happy couple emerge from the church.

Afterwards the newlyweds keep a handful of their wedding bomboniere in a little bag for good luck.
