A study has revealed the type of birth control that the majority of female family-planning providers use.

The research, published in a medical journal called Contraception, found that 40 per cent of 331 healthcare providers (aged between 25 and 44) use an intrauterine device (IUD).

Only 16 per cent said they were on the pill while 11 per cent use the ring and only nine per cent opt for condoms as protection.

The IUD is a small plastic and copper device that is inserted into your womb.

It can stay in the womb from five to ten years depending on the type and some are 99 per cent effective.
