The real reason a bride throws the bouquet is weirder than expected

We've been wrong about this tradition for years and years

Laura Holland

Throwing the bouquet is a well-known tradition at weddings.

All the unmarried ladies form a line and try their luck at catching the bouquet. But why?

It’s an English tradition which has been passed down through the generations and is supposed to represent the passing on of good fortune from the bride to a single lady.

According to WeddingWire, when this first took off the guests would be invited to try and tear pieces of the bride’s dress or clothing and flowers to get some of this good fortune. In order for her to get away intact, she would throw the bouquet at them as a means to distract them.

The single lady who caught it would then get some of the good fortune and would be next in line to marry.

Could you imagine all the women at your wedding clawing at your beautiful dress? They cost upwards of €2000 so it’s lucky this part of the tradition has been forgotten.
