This modern wedding trend is really quite bizarre

Megan Roantree

Would you do if for your wedding?

With the influx of social media in our society, a bride and groom can either shun it from a wedding, that is, tell guests not to upload photos of them to Facebook or Tweet about the happy couple, or they can embrace it.

Many couples are now doing the latter and using social media as part of their wedding. This may mean sharing the news on Twitter, inviting people through Facebook (or at least getting their address through the site) and uploading photos of the big day.

But it seems one of the biggest trends to emerge between social media and weddings is a unique hashtag for the big day.

This is usually a combination of the couples’ names or a play on something significant to them e.g #TomandMarysbigday.

Now, we know what you’re thinking, that really isn’t all that bizarre, and it’s really not. In fact, it kind of makes sense, if people are going to be uploading images of your special day across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and more, it makes sense to keep track of them all though a nifty key hashtag.

The bizarre part is that people are now paying a specialist to create such hashtags for their big day.

One woman charges quite a lot of money to come up with a single hashtag for spouses-to-be. Marielle Wakim launched HappilyEverHashtagged and charges $40 for a single hashtag idea.  The premium pack gives couples three options, plus two more for any bachelor and bachelorette parties and that costs around $115 .

Marielle uses the couples names and significant details to come up with witty or pun infused hashtags for their big day.

For example, One woman names Molly married a man who’s surname is Tempo, her solution? #MollyPicksUpTheTempo.

Another example is Maggie and Charlie’s hashtag #CharMagweddon, get it?

Come on guys, if you want a hashtag, I trust you to come up with your own. Spend that money on something more important.
