Save money and do some good for the world around you by using simple measures to conserve energy in the home. If you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry! We’ll be bringing you one great energy-saving tip every day for the next month.
12. Cook smarter in the kitchen
The vast majority of us tend to use the most electricity when we’re in the kitchen. Appliances like ovens, microwaves, kettles, toasters and dishwashers can be major drains on our energy supply, so if you’re trying to be more energy efficient, it’s important to be smart when it comes to your kitchen.
A quick and easy way to save energy and move in the kitchen is to take a smarter, more energy efficient approach to cooking.
For example, invest in some copper-bottomed pots and pans. Copper uses heat more efficiently when you’re cooking on the stove part of your cooker. This type of material allows the heat to spread across the base of the pot and pan ensuring that your food is cooked faster without using excess amounts of energy.
Another thing you can to do be energy efficient in the kitchen is to turn off your oven or your stove when your food is almost ready. By doing this, you’ll be cutting the energy supply (which will save you money in the long run) but the existing heat will still finish your cooking for you, providing you don’t open your oven door.
Finally, when it comes to heating things up on the stove, make sure you match your pot size to the burner on your stove. When you use a small pot on a large burner, you lose so much heat and energy.
The next time you’re in your kitchen, why not try one of the helpful tips above and see if you can notice the difference on your next electricity bill?
