Each of us need just 33 items of clothing in our wardrobes… here’s why

Niamh Maher

Could you live with 33 items of clothing for just three months? Well, that’s the challenge of Project 333 which has been encouraging people to ‘be more with less’ since 2010.

The brain child of Courtney Carver, the project is featured in the Minimalist documentary which was released to rave reviews on Netflix last year.

The documentary follows a duo of American podcasters and authors as they tour the states attempting to introduce people to the idea of minimalism.

Truth be told, we’re terrible women for ‘stuff’ around here in Her Towers. So a minimalistic lifestyle may not be within our reach, but a declutter of clothing sounds not only attractive but also attainable.

OK, let’s get serious. Here are the stipulations: the 33 items should include clothing, accessories, jewellery, outerwear and shoes. However, it does NOT include wedding rings or sentimental jewellery, underwear (THANK GOD), sleepwear, and workout clothing.

You can only wear workout clothing when working out though (foiled!).

You’re encouraged to make a list of the 33 items you intend to keep, box up the remainder and put it all out of sight.

If you purchase specific items for the project think of the ‘one in two out’ approach.
