Weekend Plans: Here’s the ultimate Game of Thrones road trip through Northern Ireland

Alice Murray

Game of Thrones fans rejoice, some of our favourite filming locations are just a stone’s throw away.

As most people will know Northern Ireland is one of the principal filming locations for the hit HBO show.

With season six wrapping up this week, we’re already having some major Game of Thrones withdrawals.

Well, to help fill that Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your life, why not take a little trip up north?

We’ve devised the ultimate Game of Thrones (GOT) road trip using the free filming locations app which is available on Apple and Android .

1. Haunted Forest

Our first stop is the Haunted Forest, known to locals as Tollymore Forest Park, in Co. Down. This was where the White Walkers began their march into the realm of men. The ‘Bastard of Bolton’ hunted Theon here, and it’s where the Starks discover the direwolves.

2. Dothraki Grasslands

The gorgeous Shillanavogy Valley, beneath Slemish Mountain in Co. Antrim was the setting for the Dothraki grasslands, where the Khalasar departs Pentos and rides to Vaes Dothrak.

3. Have a feast

Not technically a filming location, but after all that trekking around you might be glad to stop for a cup of tea.

The 4* Ballygally Hotel in Co. Antrim offers a GOT afternoon tea with all the trimmings. Tuck into Lannister egg rolls, Jon Snow cakes or even a Dothraki trifle with mini Dragon’s eggs! Basically, it is themed food heaven.

4. Kings Road

Possibly one of the best-known filming locations for GOT, Kings Road aka. The Dark Hedges in Co. Antrim featured on a few pivotal episodes. Most notably it’s where Arya Stark fled Kings Landing dressed as a boy.

5. The Iron Islands

Our next stop is the Iron Islands, otherwise known as Ballintoy Harbour, Co. Antrim. The Iron Islands have been featured in many GOT episodes. This was where Theon Greyjoy had his homecoming and was later baptised. It was also where the pirate Salladhor Sann met Davos and pledged his loyalty and support to Stannis Baratheon.

6. Bunk down at Winterfell

After a busy day immersing yourself in the world of GOT you’re going to want somewhere nice to lay your head and we can think of nowhere better than the forest of ‘Winterfell’ at Castle Ward, Co.Down. Stay in a quirky glamping pod surrounded by filming hotspots.

You can even recreate your own Game of Thrones moments with replica character costumes and Stark family ‘LARP swords.’ The experience includes one night’s glamping with archery and cycling activities.
