Why Bringing Your Phone Into The Bathroom Is An Absolutely Terrible Idea

Apart from the obvious dropping it down the toilet scenario!

Cathy Donohue

Bringing your phone into the bathroom while you do your business seems extreme but the reality is a lot of people do it.

However, the fact is it can cause bacteria to multiply rapidly with a detrimental effect on your health.

To find out exactly what happens when you’re in the loo, smartphone in hand, Buzzfeed spoke to two experts from the University of Arizona, microbiology professor Charles Gerba and Kelly Reynolds, associate professor of environmental health.

Charles pointed out that most surfaces in a bathroom are subject to contamination so when your handbag rests on the floor, it is pretty likely to attract some ‘fecal matter’.

Ewwww we know.

Even washing your hands doesn’t solve the problem because once you touch another surface (door handle, sink etc) you could pick up more germs.

Disgusting fact of the day comes courtesy of Kelly and it is that “when you flush the toilet, water with feces and urine sprays about six feet in every direction”.

Results from a study at the University of Arizona found that 9 out of 10 phones had “a potential disease-causing microbe” and bringing your phone to the bathroom only worsens the problem.

Moral of the story – don’t bring your phone anyway near the toilet, or the sink, or even beyond the bathroom door.
