Woman wins cheese rolling contest despite being knocked unconscious

Ellen Fitzpatrick

A woman has won a cheese rolling contest despite being unconscious during the competition – yes, really.

19-year-old Delaney Irving was taking part in a cheese rolling contest when she fell while rolling the 3kg Gloucester cheese wheel down Coopers Hill in Brockworth, near Gloucester.

After waking up in the medical tent, Delaney hasn’t even realised she won the contest.

Speaking to BBC News, the 19-year-old said: “I remember running, then bumping my head, and then I woke up in the tent. I still don’t really believe it, but it feels great.”

Hundreds took part in the event, even travelling from across the world to be involved – including Delaney.

The Vancouver Island native said the race was “good… now that I remember it.”

Kyla Hill of Team Cheese, the group of volunteers who help organise the event, said that the event itself put Brockworth village “on the map, makes us a bit famous, draws people in from over the world.”

And this event really is as crazy as it seems, with many tuning in simply just to divulge in the insanity of it all but hey, you can’t say it isn’t entertaining.

One viewer said: “Totally worth it for the cheese..just saying.”

Another said: “now THIS is a sport.”

A third added: “…. still on the list of Things I’ll Never Do… but more power to those brave souls doing it. And congrats to the winner.”

While a fourth joined in, saying: “Not sure this is the most sensible sporting event out there.
