Today (Day 10) is all about improving focus and WellGood ambassador and performance psychologist Gerry Hussey is giving us some expert advice for us to do just that.
It’s all about training our brain and teaching it to act in ways that are more helpful to us. Yep, it's not just arms and legs that need a workout, so building particular routines into our day to achieve better function is key.
Here's a little exercise Gerry recommends doing for our brain:
Try balancing on one foot for 15 seconds. When you’ve finished, do the same but now with your eyes closed. If you topple, no worries. Keep trying it every day until you get better at it. It’s SO simple, yet so effective. It shows us that when we lose one of our senses (our sight) we can be forced to become more aware of our surroundings and our focus. It trains our brain to find stability and calm.
Next up, challenge that brain. Use your left hand to text if you usually use the right. We live in auto-pilot, stopping us from using other parts of the brain. Change the teeny tiny things, and you’ll see that things are beginning to change.
Gerry's other top tips for super brain function include drinking water regularly (1 percent dehydration creates 5 percent brain decrease in performance) giving your brain recovery time (think sitting in a quiet space and/or sleep), plus giving yourself mindful moments where you can just focus on your breathing.
In the video below, Gerry talks about multitasking - essentially it’s a myth. It doesn't serve us well, and really, we're not giving individual tasks the focus they need. Rather, we're just on auto-pilot most of the day, trying to get what needs to be done, done. Although we might think our daily life routine calls for PLENTY of multitasking, there’s no need, once we ensure we manage our time better and allow our brain to rest, we'll be doing fab.
This isn’t the only advice for this week of course. The WellGood 30 Day Challenge means one brand new challenge comes our way each and every day. Another positive, is that they’re SO achievable. They might even seem insignificant at first, but make these teeny tiny changes and you can prepare for LOTS of good vibes and opportunities that are sure to head your way.
