Where do we sign up?

Ever wanted to make your own beer? Well, now you can and get a degree in the process.

Imagine a college course where you could drink beer all the time and pass with flying colours. Well, that’s about to become a reality as Institute of Technology Carlow has become the first institute to offer a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree programme in Brewing & Distilling.

According to The Irish Mirror, the course will only have 18 places and will focus on modules in yeast biology, the brewing process and distilled spirits production.

The brewing sector is rapidly expanding with new distilleries being developed constantly and it now exports over 95% of its production.

Speaking about the course, President of IT Carlow, Dr Patricia Mulcahy, said:

“[It’s] designed to support the brewing and distilling industry, which is a key growth sector and one undergoing a major renaissance.

“Institute of Technology Carlow is ideally positioned – strategically, academically and geographically – to establish itself as a centre for teaching, learning, research and innovation in both brewing and distilling and the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Brewing & Distilling programme will target both national and international learners.

“This new course builds on a long tradition of degree programmes in biosciences at Institute of Technology Carlow.”

The points needed to get on the course are not yet known and will be determined next summer from the demand through the CAO.
