Take care on the roads this weekend, even more than you already do.
From today, a new and stricter penalty point system has been introduced for Irish drivers.
The Road Safety Authority’s new initiative means from now on, anyone caught breaking a speed limit, using a mobile phone while driving, or not wearing a seat belt will get three penalty points instead of two.
You’ll still be subjected to a fine, and if you fail to pay and are summoned to appear in court, you’ll be facing five penalty points instead of the current four.
Other new rules include the introduction of the N plate for newly-qualified drivers, who must display the new plate on their car to let fellow motorists know it is a Novice driver behind the wheel. Novice drivers will be banned from driving for six months if they collect seven penalty points; other drivers still face disqualification after 12 points.
Similar to learner drivers, Novice drivers will also be subject to lower alcohol limits.
