The NFL have been rocked by yet another domestic violence incident as police have stated that Jonathan Dwyer of the Arizona Cardinals has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

The arrest comes in the wake of a number of high profile assault allegations involving American football players. In the last few weeks, Ray Rice of Baltimore Ravens was suspended after a video emerged allegedly showing him striking his fiancée in the face.

Now, 25-year-old Dwyer faces charges of aggravated assault and preventing someone from calling 911. He too has been suspended from the team where he features as a running back.

The charges follow two incidents at his home in July of this year involving a woman and an 18-month-old child.

The Cardinals have since deactivated the player following his arrest yesterday. A statement by the team read: “We became aware of these allegations this afternoon when notified by Phoenix police and are cooperating fully.

“Given the serious nature of the allegations, we have taken the immediate step to deactivate Jonathan from all team activities. We will continue to closely monitor this as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available.

Ray Rice is also in the middle of domestic abuse allegations.

According to BBC News, NFL critics have lashed out at League Commissioner Roger Goodell in response to the recent spate of domestic assault incidents within the league. Fans are calling on Goodell to step down after Ray Rice received just a two-game ban for his alleged assault.

The league have since announced that they are to hire four women to become advisers on domestic violence.
