Australia has voted in favour of changing the law to allow same-sex couples get married. 61.6 percent voted in favour of the change.

The result was announced at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia during the official Melbourne Postal Survey Result Announcement.

Australians have voted for marriage laws to be changed to allow same-sex marriage, with the Yes vote defeating the No. Despite the Yes victory, the outcome of today’s result is not binding. It must now be brought before the Australian Parliament in Canberra who will pass legislation.

The Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnball, has said that he will make it his duty to get the law changed before Christmas. Speaking on a video posted to Twitter he said:

“The Australian people have had their say, and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality.

They voted overwhelmingly for fairness, Yes for commitment, Yes for love.

And now it’s our job, as the Australian Parliament, all of us here to get on with it and get this done before Christmas.”
