33-year-old Cork GAA icon Valerie Mulcahy is to retire from inter-county football today.
She told journalist
Mary White that the time was right for her to call time on her illustrious decade-long career in ladies football.
"My motivation isn’t where it used to be, and I knew going into last year’s All-Ireland final that it would be my last. I savoured that moment and stayed on the pitch for as long as I could because I knew I’d never be back there like that again.”
A PE teacher, she plans to focus on her work with the Women Gaelic Player's Association, but she'll still miss the game when the summer rolls around.
"But, I’ve had a great time. I’ve met loads of great people along the way and was very fortunate to be involved in the team we had. We were a very motivated group who got really close from just training a lot , having the craic and bonding over a common goal."
Her 3-All Ireland-title career is one to be proud of, and many people have shared their admiration for the Cork sporting legend.
She will however, continue to play for her local club, Rockbán.
