Julian Spear died from a sudden brain haemorrhage when he jumped into the freezing cold pool earlier this week.
Royle had been married to him for almost 50 years and had two children together.
The actress, who joined Corrie this year in the role of Anthea Deering, wrote in a post on social media: "I am desperately sorry to post that we lost my wonderful husband, Julian Spear, today, 9th December.
"Perfectly fit man but jumped into a freezing outdoor pool which he assumed was heated as per usual yesterday, and he developed a sudden massive brain haemorrhage – our hearts are aching."
She added: "Married 47 years – known each other 56. Forgive me if I am not on Facebook very much for a while."
A number of friends and fans sent their love and condolences to the actress following the news, with one writing: "I'm so sorry to hear this Carol. Thinking of you & your family at this sad time."
Another said: “There are simply no words to describe the pain I feel for you all. It was an absolute honour to know Julian. The most beautiful, loving family I have the privilege of knowing. I love you all deeply and am sending every ounce of love and strength."
A third commented: Oh Carol, I'm so sorry. He was the best man. My heart is with you and the family."
Along with her current role in Coronation Street, Royle has previously starred in shows such as Casualty, Doctors and Heartbeat.
