A printing company in Drogheda has refused to accept a prospective customer’s request to print wedding invitations – as the invitations were for an upcoming same-sex marriage ceremony.
Beulah Printers in Dogheda town, County Louth refused to accept the job from a customer of four years, after claiming the wedding invitations went against their religious beliefs.
Jonathon Brennan and his fiancé approached the printers hoping to print their wedding invites, but were shocked when they heard they were being refused service by the printers as the invitations would be seen as supporting a same-sex wedding.
In a Facebook post which has since gone viral, Mr. Brennan said he was “feeling furious”, and felt he had been humiliated in front of his staff:
'I am absolutely [disgusted] with the treatment I am after receiving from Beulah print [sic] in Drogheda. I have given them my business for over 4 years now and when I asked them to design my wedding invitations he refused as himself and his business partner don’t believe in same sex civil partnerships and homosexuality and they are ‘devoted Christians’. I can’t believe how they can discriminate against gay people. And worst part of it all he comes into my place of work and humiliates me in front of all my staff. Never again will I give them my business.'
Despite the letter going viral and receiving over a thousand shares on Facebook, Beulah Print has refused to stand down.
In a statement posted to their own Facebook page, the company said:
The company’s post received a number of complaints, with previous customers refusing to give any more business to the printers.
Labelled ‘disgusting’ ‘outrageous’ and ‘vile’, a boycott has now been called on the business.
The company have refused media requests to further comment on their stance.
