The animal was found with “gruesome” injuries.

The DSPCA is currently seeking public assistance after the remains of a dog were discovered in a bin in South Dublin.

The animal, a large tan male un-neutered bull terrier, had been decapitated.

Its remains were taken to the DSPCA Shelter in Rathfarnham, where they were examined by DSPCA Veterinary team.

While a cause of death has not yet been determined, it is thought that the dog had been dead for two days.

Following the disturbing discovery, a full investigation has been launched by the DSPCA and Gardaí at Clondalkin

A microchip was found on the animal’s body, which will “assist the investigation”.

“We know that the animal was not killed or decapitated at the place it was found and there is evidence that it was brought there in a vehicle and dragged a short distance to where it was dumped,” a spokesperson for the organisation said.

“We really need to find out what happened to this poor animal.  It is a disgraceful way to treat any animal and the fact that its head is missing is even more disturbing.”

Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is urged to come forward and contact the DSPCA Inspectors at 01 4994727 or Clondalkin Garda Station.
