Workers at Dunnes Stores have voted to take industrial action at 107 stores across the country on Holy Thursday.

The one-day strike is the latest development in a long-running row about work conditions at the company, with trade union Mandate confirming today that the action will go ahead on April 2nd unless the company engages in negotiations.

A strike on Holy Thursday would be a blow for the retailer as it is one of the busier days of the year for alcohol sales, ahead of the Good Friday ban.

“Nobody wants this industrial action to go ahead but the ultimate responsibility lies with the company who can resolve this dispute with one simple phone call,” a union spokesperson told RTÉ News.

Approximately 5,000 workers are due to take part in the industrial action but according to The Irish Times, Dunnes Stores have warned of possible layoffs and redundancies if “harm” was inflicted on the company.
