‘Feel the fear, and do it anyway’ – Here’s why all women should try solo travel

Niamh Maher

Well… it is GRIM out there today.

But at least we’re past the most depressing day of the year that is, Blue Monday (sigh). Although things may seem pretty bleak, we’re opting to take the road less traveled of a Tuesday and be irritatingly positive. We’re going on an around the world adventure with a special travel edition of Girls With Goals.

From solo travel to packing woes, if you’re thinking of booking a trip then this episode is a must listen. In studio, we’re joined by award-winning travel bloggers Tara Povey and Stephanie Buckley, with over 50 thousand followers between them on Instagram it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about the world.

We’re also joined on the line by broadcaster and TV presenter Michelle Doherty who recently made the big move to Australia with her family, also joining us from Brazil (JEALOUS) is the woman behind the wildly popular Gap Year Guru blog, Jess Glynn.

Jess fills us in on why she decided to pack in the 9 to 5 and embark on a global adventure. Listen in at 9:01 in the link below or keep reading… but be warned, if you’re at your desk you will want to run away and hop on a plane immediately.

Have you been daydreaming about quitting your job or taking a break from college? Well, Jess Glynn is the woman to talk to. She packed in her 9 to 5 and has been living in Brazil for the last 5 months, she explained how it all came about:

“I had been working in digital marketing, to be honest it was always one of those things where I envisioned myself somewhere else. Every Monday morning I was waking up and saying, wouldn’t it be nice to wake up in some exotic country? I got this idea that I wanted to try live abroad, continue to freelance around the world, and see how long I could do it for.”

We also spoke about solo travel and Jess hammered home the importance of feeling the fear and ploughing ahead:

“You’re always going to feel that fear, the fear is going to be there no matter what. Nothing is perfect, you’re going to come across situations that are going to make you feel uncomfortable. But stand up tall, shoulders back, feel the fear and just do it anyway. That would be my top tip for any woman who wants to go solo travelling”.

Jess is continuing her adventures around the world and will be heading to Hong Kong in the near future, you can follow her journey via her Instagram account.

On this week’s episode, we’re also taking a look at some incredible European weekend destinations (3:59), we’ll chat about glorious staycations (6:41) that don’t involve an airport and personal trainer turned travel enthusiast Siobhan O’Hagan joins us to chat about keeping on track with our fitness goals while abroad (16:05).
