Lord Lawson was the chancellor from 1983 to 1989 under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and he’s recently come under fire for a joke her made during a debate about Britain’s possible exit from the European Union.
The BBC reported that he said it “would be great” if the Republic of Ireland said it had “made a mistake” in getting independence from Britain in 1922, when answering a question on the effect of Britain leaving the EU, something he is in favour of.
He joked: “I would be very happy if the Republic of Ireland – I don’t think it’s going to happen – were to say we made a mistake in getting independence in 1922, and come back within the United Kingdom. That would be great.”
