Mullingar Garda Station in Co. Westmeath was evacuated early on Wednesday afternoon after a member of the public brought a viable grenade in for examination.
According to reports, the device was found in a garden in nearby housing estate Newtown Lawns.
It has been reported that the member of the public found the device in their garden and brought it in for inspection by the Gardaí.
The station was evacuated and the army bomb disposal unit was called to the site.
It is understood that the house in Newtown Lawns was sealed off with a number of residents evacuated for a period of time.
The Westmeath Examiner have reported that the device was a Mills 36 make and is believed to date back to the Civil War.
