Gardaí continue to investigate car fire that killed two children
A criminal investigation is currently underway.
The Gardaí are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a car fire in Weastmeath that killed two children, and left their mother injured.
Five-year-old Thelma Dennany and two-year-old Michael Dennany died after the car they were in was engulfed by fire near Multyfarnham on Friday afternoon. Thelma died at the scene, while Michael was pronounced dead at the Midlands Regional Hospital later that evening. Their mother, Lynn Egar, was airlifted from the scene. She suffered serious injuries, but is said to be in a stable condition.
Now, as The Irish Times reports, the Gardaí are investigating the possibility that the fire was started intentionally. A criminal investigation is currently underway at Mullingar Garda Station.
Over the weekend, hundreds of people attended a vigil for Thelma and Michael in Multyfarnham. During the vigil, community members walked from the pre-school Michael attended to St Cremin's National School, where Thelma was enrolled.
The school have enlisted support from psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service to be on hand today, and have asked that the family's privacy be respected during this time.
