An investigation has been launched in Cork after video footage of an attack on a young boy with special needs was allegedly posted online.

It’s understood that gardaí are looking into an incident in which a 14-year-boy with Down’s Syndrome had twigs forced down his throat and was forced to expose himself by a group of teenagers in Carrigaline, with video footage later posted to Facebook.

The horrifying attack is believed to have taken place in the last number of days and came to light on Tuesday when autism awareness campaigner Karen O’Mahony highlighted the incident on Cork’s 96FM Opinion Line, saying the boy’s parents are “devastated” with the news.

“We are disgusted by this, obviously, furious… if anyone has seen it or has information on it, please notify the gardaí about it. Every parent that has a child with special needs fears this everyday, our children being prey to ignorant bullies and we work so hard to spread awareness to avoid it. Shame on these teenagers.”
