The victim of the burglary, 73-year-old Tom Niland, is in critical condition.

Gardaí investigating an aggravated burglary in Sligo that took place in January have arrested three men.

At around 7pm on Tuesday, 18 January, three masked men forced their way into a private house on the N59 in Skreen.

The sole resident of the house, 73-year-old Tom Niland, was at home watching TV.

Tom answered a knock at his front door and was immediately and viciously assaulted and a small sum of money was stolen.

The culprits left Tom with serious head and upper body injuries and the 73-year-old remains in critical condition and on life support.

In a statement on Wednesday (9 March), Gardaí say the three men – one in their 50s, one in their 30s and one in their 20s – were arrested in the North West Region on suspicion of burglary.

They are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at separate Garda stations in the Sligo and Leitrim Division.
