Gardaí are seeking witnesses after a woman was seriously assaulted in Athlone, Co Westmeath.
The incident occurred between 12am and 12:30am on Saturday, September 4 beside Athlone Castle in Athlone town.
The suspect, a male, fled the scene as another man came to the assistance of the injured woman. He waited with the woman until her friends arrived.
A man has since been arrested in connection with the incident and Gardaí are encouraging anyone else who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed the assault to come forward.
Gardaí are particularly interested to speak to the man who came to the assistance of the woman and waited with her until her friends came to the scene.
