What do you think it’s like to be a woman in Ireland?

In the past twelve months stories like the #IBelieveHer demonstrations, the Eighth Amendment vote, the Cervical Check scandal, our lack of affordable childcare and the nurses’ strike have dominated headlines.

Issues that matter to us have been at the fore of public debate, giving us cause to reflect on what life is like for women in this country.

Still – on a global scale it would appear that ladies here don’t have it too bad.

Ireland has just been named among the top ten countries in the world to be a woman.

We placed seventh on the Women’s Liveability Index – the highest ranking of any country in Europe outside of Scandinavia.

Countries including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and Spain all failed to make the top ten.

1-10 on the Women’s Liveability Index

  1. Norway
  2. Sweden
  3. Canada
  4. Finland
  5. Iceland
  6. Denmark
  7. Ireland
  8. Slovenia
  9. Austria
  10. Estonia

The index measures the living standards of women in 100 countries and is compiled by Nestpick, a rental property website.

It looked at factors including domestic violence rates, the gender pay gap, period poverty, female literacy and female life expectancy.

Divorce laws, days of maternity leave and the right to vote were also considerations.

Nigeria was named as the worst country to be a woman in, with Ethiopia and Pakistan following closely.
