Ireland could see over 150,000 new homes built over the next 20 years due to a new housing agency.
The Land Development Agency, which will be funded with €1.25billion, will use state-owned land for regeneration and the development of social, affordable, and private housing.
The agency will see the government work with developers to see that the homes are built. This will be done either directly or through private developers.
The government has said they hope this move will lead to 150,000 new homes by 2038.
Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy told RTE today that the introduction of the new agency was "incredibly significant."
However, others have criticised the move, claiming that the government are hoping to turn a profit through the agency rather than addressing the existing housing issue.
Labour's Jan O'Sullivan told Morning Ireland that the introduction of an agency was "alarming."
She also called the move a "PR stunt" and said that the government needed to keep control of the land themselves.
