Irish fans to receive medal for sportsmanship by Paris Mayor

Well deserved!

Well deserved!

If there was one thing to come from the Euros it’s that Irish fans are absolute heroes.

Not only were they having the absolute craic, they also received praise around the world for their exceptional behaviour. They were the perfect representatives and were a huge contrast to other fans over for the games, such as the English and Russians, who were causing destruction in France.

But the Irish set themselves apart from all the trouble caused. From helping a French couple with a flat tyre, to cleaning up after themselves, fixing dents in cars and just being the best fans in general. They made us so so proud and also gave us the ultimate FOMO.

And now their efforts have been recognised as it’s been revealed that they will receive a medal for their sportsmanship from The Mayor of Paris.

According to RTÉ, they will be awarded the Medal of the City of Paris for being “exemplary in their sportsmanship” and for being ‘exceptional during the Euro’.

The Mayor has written to President Michael D Higgins to tell him of the award but it’s not yet known how or when it will be presented. Usually the award, which is known as the ‘Grand Vermeil’, is awarded to cultural and political figures.

Previous winners have been Nobel Prize in literature winner Toni Morrison, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock.

Fair play to everyone who went over to France to support the boys in green, you are heroes.
