O’Neill (40), from Tyrone, had previously served as Health Minister in the Northern Ireland executive and was officially announced as McGuinness’ successor on Monday following
McGuinness’ decision not to contest the forthcoming Northern Ireland assembly elections due to ill-health.
In an interview to coincide with the announcement, O’Neill described being handed the leadership of the party in the north as "a huge honour" and "a really, big, big privilege".
