Roman Najdzinowicz has been hailed a hero by newspapers today as he, with the help of others, climbed up the outside of a building to try and save a mother and her two children after a fire broke out in their home.

The Polish man climbed up the building to try and reach the balcony of the burning apartment but was unable to break through the door.

The fire started around 7.00am on Sunday morning in a second-floor apartment in Shankill Village, Dublin. Sarah Martin and two of her three children were asleep in the house at the time.

The mother-of-three was in her home with daughter Sahara (3) and son Tadgh (1) when the fire broke out. Brave neighbours, including Najdzinowicz, tried to break into the home in order to rescue the family as they waited for emergency services to arrive.

Sarah had managed to grab her daughter when the blaze broke out but was unable to get through the smoke to her son.

Firefighters brought the mother and her children to Tallaght Hospital. It is reported that three-year-old Sahara was discharged last night but mother and son remained in the hospital for the night.
