It seems like RTE have planned quite the celebration for the Easter Rising, with O’Connell St being transported back 100 years to mark the Easter Rising on Easter Monday, April 6th.
Step into history this Easter Monday, as O’Connell Street celebrates the history of 100 years ago with stage and street performances, vintage exhibitions, family-friendly talks, tours and broadcasts.
One of Dublin’s main shopping streets, O’Connell Street will be pedestrianised for the day and turned into a 1915 thoroughfare, with performances from Jack L, The High Kings, and the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society keeping families entertained.
Live broadcasts of special edition RTE shows will feature as part of the RTE Road to the Rising tribute to the day.
Take a turn on the vintage carousel, take part in a period wedding or sit back and enjoy a silent movie in the cinemobile.
Prepare for The Abbey to come to life, with two new dramas specifically devised for the event will premiere on the day. ANU Productions’ “Yellow” will focus on Dublin during World War 1, while RTÉ’s Drama On One will resurrect a play that was due to be staged at the Abbey Theatre during Easter Week, 1916.
Other attractions on the day include more than 60 lectures, a historian talk in the GPO and advice for how to record your family’s memorabilia for years to come with experts.
Speaking about the upcoming festivities, Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke said:
“I invite everyone who has an interest in this period in our history to join us on O’Connell Street on Easter Monday for what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable family day out as we look ahead to the Centenary just one year from now.”
