The renovation of the main runway at Dublin airport will see the diversion of numerous flights over the south of Dublin.

From September onwards, flights designated between 11pm and 5am will be diverted, with up to 420 flights a week having to change route.

According to The Irish Times, Dublin Airport’s main runway is now in its 27th year and has been chosen for refurbishment. It’s reported the project will take 15 months to restore the runway to its original condition.

The runway currently operates approximately 60 ‘movements’ per night (compiled of both takeoffs and landings) which will be affected by the works.

The renovation works means there will be two different approaches to the airport, one that includes rural areas such as Naul in north county Dublin and another that covers areas such as Clontarf, Bray, Artane, Blackrock, and Shankhill before finally reaching Santry where the aircraft is just under 300m from the ground.

One worried resident told of his plight as his house is already close to flights landing.

“My house [is so close to the flight path] you can shake hands with them.”

The works are said to begin this September meaning flights during the night and morning will be diverted for more than a year.
