The school shooting took place less than ten miles from Columbine.
On Tuesday afternoon local time, nine students were shot at the STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado.
Local police have two fellow students in custody and they are being held as suspects.
Sheriff Tony Spurlock of Douglas County said at a news conference that "We know two individuals walked into the STEM school, got deep inside the school and engaged students in two separate locations."
According to The New York Times, it is reported that the suspects were armed with a handgun and other weapons, and they confronted law enforcement officers when they arrived.
Sheriff Spurlock stated "I can tell you that there were shots fired. Our officers went in and engaged the suspects. We did struggle with the suspects to take them into custody."
Five hours after the shooting had ended, at approximately 6.45pm local time (12.15am GMT), it was confirmed that one of the victims, an 18-year-old male, had died from his injuries.
