It’s been some day for Irish boxing, with Michael O’Reilly claiming a second gold for the country at the European Games.
O’Reilly faced Azerbaijan’s Xaybula Musalov in the middleweight final in Baku after receiving a bye when his semi-final opponent Maxim Koptyakov was forced to withdraw from the competition.
The bout was a close contest, with both fighters claiming a round each before O’Reilly rallied in the final minutes to gain the upper hand on a tired Musalov.
After an anxious wait for the judges decision, the Irish boxer came out a worthy winner and brought our medal tally up to two.
His victory followed a storming success from champion Katie Taylor in the lightweight division, with the Bray woman beating French fighter Estelle Mosselly to the top of the podium.
