The image went viral after a journalist asked locals to help locate the children's parents
Local police immediately picked up on the image which was going viral in India, with Police Officer Madhur Verma sending a team to the train station in New Delhi.
When police arrived the children had moved, leading officers to believe they had been kidnapped.
The children, Rahnuma, 7, Raja, 5, and Sanya, 4, were collected by their father (who is divorced from their mother), and were taken to another state for the day.
When questioned by police, the children told officers their father had left them at the train station after a day out saying their mother would collect them.
Verma said:
"When we arrived at the mother’s house she was asleep and said she had been working and had not been contacted by her ex- husband.
"As far as she was aware the children were staying with him.”
