Irish Water has this week reportedly confirmed that they will send out water bills in the coming month to over 1.7 million households and are doing so in the knowledge that thousands of those bills will be incorrect.

According to reports, the company stated that they have had to operate on the basis of incomplete information and that more than 150,000 households will receive a default bill.

The company stated that these households are not customers of Irish Water as they have not registered or provided information.

The bills, which will cover an eight week period starting from next week, will also ignore the Government’s €100 water conservation grant.

The first quarter will see the bills at €39 for a single adult home and €64 for a home with two or more adults.

It is reported that those who are not registered will receive a bill for €64.

The company has warned that as they do not have complete information for all households that are on boil water notices or have their own septic tanks for example and that these homes may be subject to incorrect billing.

Irish Water has stated that they will have a 24-hour call centre staffed by 750 people to deal with queries.

Alan Kelly, Minister for the Environment, told the Dáíl on Tuesday that people will have to register with Irish Water before the end of June in order to qualify for the €100 grant.
