A 32-year-old man has been arrested after a shopkeeper in Glasgow was brutally killed outside his newsagent in the Shawlands area of the city.

The police are treating the murder as ‘religiously prejudiced’ according to the BBC, with both the man arrested and Mr Shah being of the Muslim faith.

The 40-year-old was found seriously injured and died in hospital just hours after he had posted social media messages wishing people a happy Easter.

A post on Thursday from an account that appears to be Mr Shah’s said: “Good Friday and very happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation x!”

A GoFundMe account has been set up by customers and friends of Shah’s to help raise money for their expenses.

“This fundraiser has been launched by myself (Jen) and friends (Lauran, Ellanor & Katie) who are all local residents in Shawlands and regular customers of Asad’s.  As a resident of Waverley Garden’s for over 2 years, I personally got to know him whilst visiting his shop on almost a daily basis. ”

“Mr Shah was a popular, well respected and much loved member of our commuity and his death has devastated many. He was a warm and friendy man and he always went out of his way to make time to talk to you  –  he was more than just our local shopkeeper.  He was a friend to many.”

The page has raised almost £25,000 pounds to date.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon attended a vigil for Shah last night.
