The video was shot from a boat in the water and both the people in the boat and the viewer are warned by a voice off camera “Watch out for the shock, it’s coming.”
Speaking to the Brisbane Times, Mr McNamara stated;
“It was a spur of the moment thing to head out and film the volcano. We saw it erupting and the ladies from Kokopo Beach Bungalows where we were staying said they could take us out on the boat to get a closer look. I thought I might as well try and capture something you rarely get to see.”
The eruption last week caused disruption to flight paths, with many flights rerouted. Meanwhile the town of Rabaul, which had only been rebuilt after it was destroyed by a volcano eruption in 1994, was evacuated.
