A recent report by Russian TV depicting Carlow town as a derelict place has been slammed by the town’s residents.
In a report called “Austerity Isle: Emigration from Ireland skyrockets despite IMF bailout”, Russia Today reporter Tesa Arcilla walked the streets of Carlow highlighting boarded up storefronts, “for sale” signs and closing down sales.
Arcilla reports that the town, “now stands empty.”
“This town is just one hour away from Dublin, but miles apart in terms of economy” she says. “Even if you just scratch the surface and look around, you’ll see a lot of these boarded up houses…”

Local man Bryan McDonald has also been criticised for featuring in the report. Gesturing to the streets, the young man said that Carlow now has “nothing.”
In response to the video, the Carlow Nationalist quoted angry residents who said that the report was “very biased”.
“It has left a poor taste in people’s mouths” said Ger Holohan who is now trying to counteract the video with a more positive portrayal of Carlow.
“A lot of people out there are very annoyed” he said.
One YouTube commenter stated that it wasn’t the town centre that the report was filmed in but a back alley, writing; “What do they expect, a parade to be going through?”
